Fishing Rod and Fly Line ratings

I am about to buy a rod rated 7/8 to use mostly on reservoirs. But I don’t know whether to buy a seven or eight-weight line to go on it. What do you suggest?

Nick Hart answers: When purchasing a new fly fishing rod it is important to try and have a cast with it if possible. And if you can do this with the actual fly lines that you will be using, then even better.

However, as a general rule, I would advise using the heavier fly line to provide maximum load upon the fishing rod. When deciding on an option think about the reservoir fishing you are most likely to be involved in. For example, a seven-weight line is more suited to delicate presentation of dry flies or nymphs than an eight weight, while the heavier line is ideal for the casting of lures in windy conditions. If you decide on a number seven-weight fly line then a fishing rod rated 6/7 may be better.
