Helpful Hook Threader

Tying new flies onto droppers gets more difficult with each new fly, and my eyesight isn’t what it once was. I’ve seen quick-change connectors. Are they secure and do they impact on the movement of my fly?

Rob Edmunds replies: There are a number of ‘fly links’ or ‘quick change connectors’ on the market, that allow the angler to change fly without retying the connecting link. I’ve only used them on limited occasions but in my opinion they are secure and are an option if you are fishing a single large lure (i.e. large Tadpole or Booby). But because of their size I don’t think they are acceptable for fishing smaller flies. The profile and weight of the smaller fly is altered and presentation is compromised.

A better option for you is to buy a hook threader. These excellent little devices help in threading the leader through the eye of hook in low light conditions, and are a must for those with limited sight. Try the Guide Quik Tye hook threader (around £10).
